What to Put in a Diaper Bag for Babies

In an effort to be prepared for any occasion, from a diaper emergency to a bump on the head, many first-time mothers try to pack their entire nursery in their baby's diaper bag. Your baby doesn't need all of his favorite toys and two bottles for a quick trip to the post office, but it's important to pack the necessities.

Diapering

  • As the name implies, diapers are the most important item to pack in a diaper bag for girls. Pack more diapers than you think you will need. As your baby grows, switch out diapers that are too small for larger ones. In addition to diapers, keep a small pack of wipes and diaper rash cream in your bag. A diaper changing pad is also helpful. Include an empty plastic for disposing of dirty diapers.

Feeding

  • Include a bottle of breast milk or formula in your diaper bag for quick feeding. If your baby is eating solid foods, include a jar or two of her favorite baby food, along with a spoon. Keep spit-up cloths handy for unexpected messes. If your baby drinks water or juice, include a cup with a lid as well.

Clothing

  • Pack an extra set of clothing for your baby, including pants, shirt or shorts, underclothes and socks. In addition, an extra blanket or jacket is useful for chilly weather, and a hat will block bright sunlight. Remember to pack a breast pad and extra shirt for yourself.

Toys and Other Necessities

  • Pack a comforting toy or two for your child in your diaper bag (diaper bags for girls). If your baby uses a pacifier, pack a few in your diaper bag as well. Include a sling so you can hold your baby while leaving your hands free to complete errands.

Emergency

  • Keep a small first aid kit on hand for emergencies. Include bandages, first aid cream, alcohol swabs, nail clippers and a list of emergency contact information. If your child takes medication, keep a few doses in your diaper bag (diaper bags for girls). A small bottle of hand sanitizer and sunscreen are also good to keep on hand. Take care of yourself by packing a drink and a healthful snack, especially if you are breastfeeding.
